The Media Information and Communication Technology Laboratory (MICT), under the leadership of Prof. Horita Yuukou,
is a part of the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Intellectual Information Systems Engineering.
Our research here is focused on image evaluation, ITS, web image applications and IMAGE PROCESSING in general.

2009/06/09 ITS members reported the accomplishment of "snow hazard map" at SCOPE-assembly (Place: National Institute of Informatics(Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo))
2009/01/23 Maeda (M2) & Urakami (M1) won a special award at CVG2008(Campus Venture Grand 2008) in central Japan (Place: THE NIKKAN KOGYO SHIMBUN.LTD Nagoya branch office)
We represented our research at AVSS2009(international conference).
The title was
"Omni-directional polarization image sensor based on an omni-directional camera and a polarization filter".
We deeply exchange our views and activities with many other researchers in the Welcome Reception and Poster session.
Many researchers in the conference mainly presented surveilance system that employing image processing.
Professor Horita, Research Associate Shibata and Maeda (M2) presented their method
which distinguishes omni-directional road surface condition with a high degree of accuracy.
Generally, using two types of polarization information whose phases are different can distinguish
the road surface condition according to the luminance ratio of optical reflection strength of the road.
However, this method needs two cameras at least and can distinguish only narrow area.
Our method can capture an image of omni-directional area with a camera,
and distinguish the road surface condition with the image.
We enjoyed the encouragement from many researchers and it was a nice day.
The venue of AVSS2010 in next year is Boston!
The annual conference of The Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers
was held at Kougakuin University.
Tanaka, Yamanaka, Sakai (M1) presented their research.
Their working field are Image Quality Assessment and Improvement,
and also they discussed actively with many other researchers.
The presentation title of Tanaka was "Analysis of Individual Characteristics of Visual Impression
Based on Image Features for JPEG Coded Image",
and for Yamanaka was "Relation of Quality Degradation in Coded Stereoscopic Video
and its Two Dimensional Video"
and also for Sakai was "Reduction of Blocking Artifact in JPEG Coded Images Using Pinned Sine Transform".
Many audiences came to the conference, and we spent significant time in that day.
For the future, we will develop our research more, and we're going to present at international conferences.
What is MICT Lab.?
MICT is abbreviated name of “Media Information and Communication Technology”.
Three study fields applied Image Processing technology
At MICT, we work on 3 main research fields which use Image Processing Technology.
They are Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), web image applications and image evaluation.
For ITS, we are working to establish a hazard map system used for sensing information about road conditions,
specifically for snow fall in real time.<.p>
For web image applications, we try to improve image quality,
by using the huge on-line image databases like Flickr, which is a Web API.
For image evaluation, we are developing new approaches evaluating image quality on the computer.
One of the approaches is to examine the quantity of perceptible noise in an image.
Most of our research is aimed at these points in order to develop media information technology.

The investigation and development regarding scalable snow hazard map・information transmission in the ground resolution
ITS(Intelligent Transport Systems)is a generic name for a new traffic system
that has the purpose of solving road traffic problems.
The system can process any traffic accidents or traffic jam
using the front-line information technology linking both the people and the automobiles.
Our research is focused on developing a system which can process traffic accidents caused by icy roads in winter.
A warning system cautions drivers, cyclists and foot passenger of potential dangers related to icy roads on a real-time information basis.
The information is oriented to travelers' safety and convenience.
We are trying to create a practical application for this technology by using AJAX,
an innovative technology of asynchronous communicating.
Real-time snow hazard map using Google Maps
Have you ever tripped on an icy road?
Don't you think it might be useful if you knew about the status of snow or icy roads around your home?
The snow hazard map can browse through real-time data about snow-fall and temperatures according to a certain map location.
This cannot be checked at the Meteorological Office or Land, Infrastructure and Transportation Ministry.
There are already many resources that provide information for certain cities or prefectures regarding the meteorological situation.
In contrast, our hazard map allows access to detailed local information through geographical statistics analysis from a huge database.
Furthermore, the system allows for seamless visualization,by using the AJAX technology, an asynchronous communicating technology,
which does not require updating the web page.
Currently, the system has been improved to high accuracy and a wide range,
by consolidating the meteorological observation points with the sensor network and by creating XML databases.

The analysis of road・resolution improving of image by using PAL lens
PAL lens are remarkable because their field of view is 9 times wider that of a regular camera,
thus the photograph can record a considerably larger site.
Such equipment is usually applied as wide range security monitoring solution for detecting intruders or prowlers.
In this study, we use PAL lens to capture wide-range data from the roads and analyze their condition.
We use a PAL polarized light unit developed in cooperation with TATEYAMA KAGAKU GROUP,
and analyze the ratio of luminance from the images.
Generally, an image taken by a PAL lens has a distorted angular resolution compared to a normal fixed camera.
Through research, we are developing a high-definition technology for new panoramic expansion of images,
using the features of the PAL lens. (research by Hayashi, Maeda, Kaido)
The analysis of road condition by using polarizing lens
Natural light consists of a light wave that vibrates in various courses.
Polarizing lens can get only particular directional waves of light.
Polarization has a large difference of luminance between the vertical element and the horizontal element.
In this study, we investigate the algorithm for analyzing road conditions by using the features of polarization.

Semantic Image Processing
We are working on developing a semantic image processing technology by applying knowledge and statistical figures from Web images
No-reference picture quality evaluation model on MPEG-2 coding video
It is generally difficult to figure out the quality of lossy coded video, because it is dependent on its content.
An evaluation by a human person is a highly credible evaluated value; however its costs and time spent are too high.
In this study, we construct a model which would substitute the subjective evaluation of a human by a computer (the Objective Evaluation Model).
The target of the investigation is MPEG-2, which is the most commonly used video encoder.
MPEG-2 is widely used for digital broadcast, DVDs and many more.

Analysis of perceptual characteristic of quality degradation to different types of image noise
Generally, the purpose of image coding is to reduce the quantity of image data. However,
in the process of coding, image noise may occur and that deteriorates the quality of the image.
We are working to develop a relationship or balance
between the physical quantity of coding noise and the characteristics of visual perception.
If this relationship will be clearly quantified,
we can expect the method to have practical application in various fields, like image coding and others.
The method used is to compare the image which has different coding noises in still images.
We analyze the data obtained from a subjective assessment, and examine the characteristic for coding noises.

MICT Image Quality Evaluation Database
Due to the advanced development of different image compression techniques and processing systems, there is a very big concern about the levels of image quality both for providers and users in many image processing applications from compression to printing. Obviously, digital images suffer a wide variety of distortion in these applications and perceptual quality of the images are degraded. Therefore, perceptual image quality measurement is an important problem. Consequently Subjective quality assessment is the most accurate method for quality evaluation because it reflects true human perception. Thus, the goal of all objective quality assessment research is to make quality predictions that are in agreement with subjective opinion of human observers.
We conducted subjective experiments to obtain scores from human subjects at MICT lab for a number of images distorted with JPEG and JPEG2000 codec. This data set is available to the research community with free of charge.
